Not all jobs are the same, and so any guide for pricing here is rough, but most work falls into these categories. While there is a slight increase in longevity of the stonework based on price (finer work can last centuries), for the most part this is about the look you desire in your stonework.
(A quick note about pricing: the pricing on this page uses the term "per square foot of face". This refers to how many square feet one side of a wall is. For instance, the wall below is about 2 feet high and 16 feet long, so it would be considered 32 square feet of face. At $25 per square foot of face, it cost $800.)

This is the type of wall you would find going around the outside of a property or field. It is rough and involves no stone shaping, crushed stone base, or through stones, and only a rudimentary cap most of the time. $20-30 per square foot of face if you provide the stone.

OTHER STONEWORK
Rough walkway or patio (minimal shaping of the stones): $30 per square foot of surface. We provide the stone.
Tight walkway or patio (stones shaped to fit each other, drainage installed underneath): $60 per square foot of surface. We provide the stone.
Carved letters or numbers (such as an address on a boulder next to your driveway): $75 per 6 inch letter, $100 per eight inch letter.
Fully underwater work, such as a stone dock or mooring: $160 per square foot.
Sculpture: Usually about 50% greater than wall pricing. If you want a rough sculpture, it will be $30-45 per square foot of face. If you want a fine carefully carved sculpture, it will usually be $300-600 per square foot of face.
Tall Walls: once a wall is more than six feet high, the cost per square foot tends to triple. This is due to factors such as building on scaffolding, machinery rentals, special attention being paid to structural integrity, and many other considerations.
